Funniest memories: As my friends know, I was never hesitant to speak my mind when the situation
demanded immediate and obvious action, but sometimes my responses were given without anticipating all
the potential consequences, like getting "U" for unsatisfactory conduct. Both of my "U" 's were received for
my quick and frank verbal responses.
Scene 1. Mrs. Taylor's home room, about 1953......the first bell rings and the restless masses immediately
begin moving toward the door and out into the hall. Mrs. Taylor, becoming more angry, livid and red-faced by
the second, tries to move her rather large frame through the crowd at the door, hopelessly, trying to get
everyone re-seated, sputters and shouts at the top of her lungs, "Children, children, get back to your
seats.......what if everyone in school got up with the first bell?" My shouted reply even now seems so
obvious......."I guess wouldn't need a second bell". "THAT smart aleck response has just earned you a U,
Simon."
Scene 2. It's a cold Friday night 'away' football game in 1954, in Alton, Il, I believe. I played baritone horn, which
was as cold as only a brass instrument can be cold in November. My thoughtful mother had given me a quart
Thermos of hot cocoa to help keep my hands warm....but
