Funniest memories: As my friends know, I was never hesitant to speak my mind when the situation demanded immediate and obvious action, but sometimes my responses were given without anticipating all the potential consequences, like getting "U" for unsatisfactory conduct. Both of my "U" 's were received for my quick and frank verbal responses. |
Scene 1. Mrs. Taylor's home room, about 1953......the first bell rings and the restless masses immediately begin moving toward the door and out into the hall. Mrs. Taylor, becoming more angry, livid and red-faced by the second, tries to move her rather large frame through the crowd at the door, hopelessly, trying to get everyone re-seated, sputters and shouts at the top of her lungs, "Children, children, get back to your seats.......what if everyone in school got up with the first bell?" My shouted reply even now seems so obvious......."I guess wouldn't need a second bell". "THAT smart aleck response has just earned you a U, Simon." |
Scene 2. It's a cold Friday night 'away' football game in 1954, in Alton, Il, I believe. I played baritone horn, which was as cold as only a brass instrument can be cold in November. My thoughtful mother had given me a quart Thermos of hot cocoa to help keep my hands warm....but |
