Memories: In 5th Grade at Flynn Park, one of the boys smarted off to a male teacher (was there a Mr. Daniels?). The teacher picked up the boy's desk - with the boy in it - and carried it (and him) into the hallway and over to the 3rd floor window, overlooking the audio-visual truck. Holding the desk and the boy up to the window, the teacher said, "The next time I hear that in my classroom, this desk - and you - are going through this window." It never happened again.Who was our UCHS Driver's Ed teacher? My class project was making a movie of the Driver's Ed course. As I filmed from the back seat, occasionally I would ask the driver (the teacher) a question, and I remember that never once did he take his eyes off the road or answer my questions. His total concentration was on driving the car. My life-long traffic crusade resulted in a column about me in the Chicago Tribune in 1999 and an appearance on ABC's The View. The icing on the cake was during my drive home from O'Hare, after I flew back from New York that afternoon. I stopped in a restaurant and noticed that one employee kept looking at me. When I spoke to him, he said that he had seen someone who looked just like me on TV that morning and, after he saw my red VW bug outside, he knew I was the guy. |
