Greetings to my classmates:
While growing up in U.City I often vowed I would never teach, but what am I now - a teacher. After graduation from UCHS, I graduated
from Monmouth College and taught for the next eight years in Webster Groves (elementary school), the International School in Lahore,
West Pakistan (prior to Bangladesh), and Ladue (grades 7 - 12 English and Reading). This was followed by a two year clinical degree
Master of Science: Reading Consultant from the University of Chicago.
Then in 1971 I suffered severe head trauma and multiple broken bones in an automobile accident on Interstate 55. My face is rebuilt, part
plastic and part stainless steel. I spent the next two years healing my body and I struggled to find what I could do in life. Almost
everything you knew about me, singing and sports for example, had to be given up because I could no longer participate in those
activities. Now, everything is dated: BA (before the accident) and AA (after the accident.)
In 1973 I began attending the University of California, Berkeley, where I worked on a PhD in Language and Literacy. After completing four
chapters of my dissertation, I walked away from Berkeley for personal reasons. During my years at Berkeley, I began teaching at the
graduate level, first at Mills College and then at National University. Although I loved this work, for physical reasons I was forced to retire
from National University in 2001.
