I entered Hanley in January of 1953. It was scary to start mid-year
in a new school but it turned out to be a welcoming environment.
My family had just moved into our first home, on Amherst - down
the hill from the library, after years of apartment living.
I have fond memories of my U City High School years -
long-lasting friendships with classmates and positive
connections with teachers - but the two defining circumstances
of those years were my mother's illness and meeting my best
friend and life partner, Stan Gudder. The best and the worst of
times.
Since my Mom was bedridden during our Junior and Senior
years, I was responsible for running our home, which kept me
from being involved in extra-curricular activities. She passed
away in October 1957. Stan and I met in August 1955 at a Camp
Hawthorn two-week JYO retreat. Fifty-two years later we still like
being together. We married when Stan graduated from Wash U in
'58 and moved to Champaign-Urbana where our
