The year was 1989. The place Denny's on Dorsett Road,
Maryland Heights, Missouri. I was handed my usual daily
newspaper with a salad and ice tea by Cecilia. Lunch was
routine, and Cecilia apologized that she only had one section
of the paper today! I always tipped her well, got the same
lunch, and second hand newspaper was apart of our ritual. I
glanced at the section. It was opened to the obituaries. At 51 I
didn't expect to find anyone that I knew. There it was before
my eyes: "Plattner, Joan (Frank), February 25, 1989.
If you were an atheist you would have converted to a believer
immediately. What are the odds of that happening? I know
God wanted me to know. The funeral was in a few hours, and I
had to attend! Joan Z. Frank was my high school sweet heart,
and after not having seen her in years, my wife, Jane and I ran
into her a just few months before in a local eating
establishment.
