After graduation, I worked part-time for the A&P Grocery
company for a short while. I then joined the Navy with my best
friend, Norlyn Stromeyer. We went through boot camp together
in Great Lakes, Illinois. Following boot camp, Norlyn went to
California and I came back to Great Lakes to go to Electrician
Mate School. Upon graduation I went to the U.S. Naval
Submarine School in New London, Connecticut and I was later
assigned to the USS Charr SS 328 - home port San Diego,
California.
Being stationed in San Diego, we did weekly anti-submarine
warfare games with the destroyers based in Long Beach. Norlyn
and I got to play together, only we didn't know it at the time.
Crusing around in our "boat" I got to see Long Beach, San
Francisco through the periscope and the under side of the
Golden Gate bridge while looking up through the conning tower
hatch while I was driving. After this exercise, we sailed up to
Victoria, British Columbia.
