After I graduated from U City in 1957, I went to Washington University where I
completed my BA in French and Political Science in 1961. With a Woodrow
Wilson Fellowship pushing me on, I went to Columbia University in the fall of
1961. My favorite way of describing my short stay at Columbia is to note that if I
had died the first day of class, no one would have noticed until I didn't show up
for the final. After the personal kind of education I enjoyed at U City and WU, I
didn't appreciate the Columbia style of education.


I came back to St. Louis and began teaching French at the Academy of the
Sacred Heart. They were obviously desperate mid year, and I surprised myself by
finding that I actually enjoyed teaching. I started working on my teaching
credential and a master's degree that
