Like many us, I held several jobs before I found my future by
purchasing a small book distribution company in St. Louis in
1974. This was also the time when Marcia stopped being a
stay-at-home Mom and began her career as an interior
designer. She worked at Famous-Barr to learn the business,
went to school, then spent the next 20 years as a free-lance
designer working with residential and commercial clients. She
loved what she did, and I still hear from her former clients how
wonderful she was.
From 1974 on I have been working in the book business. From
an organization with five employees selling books to retail
bookstores, we now have almost 250 employees. We no longer
sell books to bookstores, which has caused me a lot of pain
because I have to buy my books at retail prices. Our business
consists of a division that sells paperback books to schools
